The Easy Lookup Simplified Chinese Character Index (Simplified Index for short) divides Simplified Chinese characters into 12 categories each with a maximum of 16 groups based on shape.
Because characters are categorized (and grouped) entirely based on shape, you don't need to know a characters radical or pronounciation to look a character up.
It is one of 3 Easy Lookup Indexes included in the Easy Lookup Chinese English Dictionary.

The shape for a category is typical of all groups within that category. For example:
Each group contains characters that begin with the shape for that group or a shape that is closely related. As a result, to locate a character using this system you simply have to find the group that looks like the first element in your character. The search is made easier in that groups with similar shapes are in the same category.
As an example, the character 驻 can be found in the 马 group which is part of the Right 乛 category.
The character 赙 can be found in the 贝 group in the Cover ⺆ category.
The character 针 can be found in the ⻐ group in the Slant 丿 category.
